Frequently Asked Questions About Midwifery Care
- How much does a midwife cost?
- Registered Midwives in British Columbia are covered by Medical Services Plan (MSP). Therefore, if you have a CareCard, there is no cost to you. If you do not have MSP, please contact us about private pay options.
- Where can I plan on birthing with a midwife?
- I have hospital admission and discharge privileges at Vernon Jubilee. This means hospital birth is an option for all women in our care. Healthy, low-risk women have the choice of home or hospital birth. There is no fee for homebirth and we bring all necessary medical supplies.
- Do I need a referral?
- No. You can self refer to a midwife. You do not need a doctor’s referral. You also do not need to see your doctor to “confirm” your pregnancy.
- Can I see both my family doctor and a midwife for my maternity care
- No. Women must choose one primary care provider for their pregnancy. Should concerns arise during your pregnancy or postpartum, we would refer you to the appropriate care provider for a consultation appointment. The majority of women who require consultation with a physician remain in primary care with their midwife. Around 6 weeks postpartum you will resume care with your family doctor
- What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?
- Registered midwives are your primary medical care providers for your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. A doula provides non-medical support during these periods. You would hire a doula privately. We have attended many births with families who have hired doulas, and believe that they are an excellent part of your birthing team!
